Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction - Review

It's been a long time since we've seen Ratchet & Clank, but the series is back and it's better than ever. This game takes us back to the basics of what made this franchise so great in the first place: Insane weapon selection, huge bosses, and an engaging story combine for an excellent game.

Welcome back to a galaxy far, far away.

Welcome back to a galaxy far, far away. Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is a game that takes place in the future (as opposed to some other time period), in which you'll be doing things like fighting space pirates and robots, flying around with jetpacks, and jumping on enemies' heads. The story follows the titular Ratchet as he helps Captain Qwark fight off an evil tyrant named Nefarious who plans on taking over the universe.

It's one of those games where you can expect plot twists and character development at every turn. It's not just a mindless shooter; it's something deeper than that!

Sense of Scale

The game takes place in a massive galaxy, and the story is epic in scope. It’s also set in the future, which means that there are lots of cool futuristic technology (like hoverboots). It’s also set in the past. In fact, it’s set all over time – you can travel back and forth between different time periods at will!

The only problem is that the game does not actually make any sense at all if you try to think about it too hard. The plot was clearly written by someone on LSD who thinks they're an owl with magical powers but doesn't really understand how owls work or what magic even means.

What Would Ratchet Do?

You're not just playing Ratchet and Clank; you ARE Ratchet. You see, you've been transported to the future and are given the opportunity to take on a role that is entirely your own. Whether or not this is meant as a demonstration of how close the game sticks to its roots or an indication that Insomniac wants us all to be more like our heroes is up for debate, but one thing's for sure: There's no shame in aping their style.

At least not until someone catches you doing it, anyway.

Not Old, Just Classic

This game is not old, it's classic. The developers at Insomniac Games do an excellent job of taking you back to the roots of the series and giving you everything that has made this franchise great over the years. It may be a new take on the series, but it will feel very familiar to fans of Ratchet & Clank's origins.

The story in Tools of Destruction isn't anything overly original or crazy, but there are enough twists and turns to keep things interesting throughout your journey. At its core though, this is still a plot about saving your home planet from destruction by an evil scientist named Dr Nefarious who wants to destroy all life in the universe using his newly acquired super weapon (the Deplanetizer). You'll find yourself fighting off hordes of robots, battling other creatures and traversing through stunning landscapes as you help Ratchet search for answers as he figures out how he can stop Nefarious' nefarious plans before they come into fruition!

Zoinks!

This game is a lot of fun, especially if you like platformers. The story is good, the voice acting is great (especially Dr. Nefarious), and the music is fantastic.

This game is also appropriate for younger players. It's not too difficult at all and the difficulty ramps up slowly as your character gains new abilities throughout the course of the game. If you're looking for something to play with your kids that won't give them nightmares or make them cry about death/loss/etc., then this may be a good fit for you!

What's Up With the Weapons?

In Tools of Destruction, Ratchet has an arsenal of over one hundred weapons at his disposal. This is a formidable number for any game to boast, but it's especially impressive when you consider that many of these weapons are returning from previous games in the series. The developers have done an excellent job including as many fan favorites as possible while still adding new ones that fit into the world and feel like they belong there.

Of course, just because a weapon looks cool doesn't mean it's always useful or effective against enemies. You'll find plenty of guns that wear their nostalgia on their sleeve (like the Groovitron), but others may not offer quite what you were hoping for (the Shrink Ray). Some take place outside your standard sci-fi fare by using real-world inspirations like boxing gloves or baseball bats (the Glove of Doom). Each one has its own personality and purpose: some are powerful while others make up for lack thereof with unique abilities like homing projectiles or explosive blasts.

Final Take

All in all, Tools of Destruction is a solid game that takes the series back to its roots. The game is a return to form for the series, with a new story and some new gameplay elements. If you’re a fan of the series, you’re going to love this game. If you haven't played any Ratchet & Clank games before, or if you're just looking for an action adventure title on your PS3 (or if you want to play one of the best PS3 games ever made), then Tools of Destruction is a great place to start.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is a solid game that takes the series back to its roots.

Welcome back to a galaxy far, far away. Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction picks up right where the last Ratchet & Clank game left off. The game is set solely in space this time around, instead of switching back and forth between space and planets like previous games did. This makes for an interesting change of pace for series veterans who are used to seeing some ground combat here or there.

Tools of Destruction's storyline brings you through a variety of locations from ice worlds to deserts with plenty in between. If you've ever wondered what kind of crazy adventure two heroes like Ratchet and Clank could get themselves into while flying around space, then look no further than Tools of Destruction's story mode!
